Ritu Verma, wife of former Women and Child Development Minister Sandeep Kumar, said Sunday that her husband had fallen prey to a conspiracy and she would stand by him through thick and thin. Kumar, who was accused of committing rape, surrendered at the Rohini police station on Saturday. He was sacked from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s cabinet after an ‘objectionable’ CD emerged.

“My husband is innocent, I stand by him. Rape charges against my husband are wrong,” said Ritu. She said that she and her family were firmly behind Kumar and would stand by him through everything that lies ahead.

”This is a political conspiracy against us. Our case is ongoing. The truth will come out before everyone very soon,” said Ritu. She said she was concerned only about her husband and her family and refused to comment on Kumar’s removal from the Cabinet. After he was sworn in as minister for Women and Child Development in February 2015, Kumar had announced on March 8, 2015 — International Women’s Day — that he touched his wife’s feet everyday and sought her blessings.

Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia had put Kumar to task in March for having insisted that his wife’s name be inscribed on a plaque that was to be put up in a school during the inauguration of classrooms. Kumar reportedly also publicly humiliated the principal of the school after she objected to this demand. A complaint was made to the Kejriwal and Kumar was made to apologise to the principal.
